Portable Folding Mobility Scooters

Travel shouldn't mean leaving your independence at home. Our portable folding mobility scooters collapse into a compact package, or split into light pieces, so they fit in a car trunk, on a train or in a hotel closet. Choose an ultra lightweight folding scooter for adults, an auto-folding model that folds at the touch of a remote, or a travel scooter that splits into five easy-to-lift sections. Every order includes free U.S. delivery, in-home setup available and a 2-year warranty.

Who are portable folding scooters for?

  • Seniors who travel by car and want a scooter they can lift in and out themselves.
  • Cruise, plane and train travelers who need a compact scooter with a lithium battery.
  • Apartment and small-home owners with limited storage.
  • Riders with limited grip or strength, especially those who prefer the remote-fold option.
  • Caregivers and family members who do the loading and want the lightest option.

Folding vs. splitting: which type do you need?

  • Folding scooters collapse as a single unit. Manual models fold by hand, while auto-folding models like the Li-Tech Alpina Velo fold with a remote in about 8 seconds. Nothing to take apart or reassemble.
  • Splitting (travel) scooters break into about five pieces. They're heavier in total, but you lift one section at a time. The heaviest piece is about 22 lb on the AstroLite and Illusion and 35 lb on the MWAY Portable.

What does "ultra lightweight" mean?
Among our folding scooters, the lightest weigh about 37 to 44 lb, and about 35 to 39 lb without the battery on some models. For splitting models, the heaviest piece is what you'll actually lift, so compare that figure rather than total weight.

How to choose a portable folding mobility scooter

  1. Check the weight you'll lift. For folding models, that's the whole scooter. For splitting models, it's the heaviest piece.
  2. Measure your trunk or storage space against the folded size.
  3. Match range to your trips. Rated range is about 7 to 11 miles, so choose one that covers your usual outing with some to spare.
  4. Check the weight rating. Our models are rated for about 253 to 300 lb.
  5. Look at the battery if you'll fly. Many airlines accept removable lithium batteries up to 300 Wh, but rules vary. Check your airline and the battery type on your model.
  6. Think about controls and comfort. Look at seat width, armrests and tiller type, especially for longer outings.
  7. Be realistic about terrain. Most have solid or flat-free tires and low clearance, so they're built for smooth pavement, tile and shopping centers.

The AstroLite's smaller 10.3Ah battery is listed as flight friendly. The Alpina Velo's is about 417 Wh, which is above the limit. The MWAY uses two 12V 13Ah batteries, so confirm the battery type with your airline. Rules vary.

Practical things to know before you buy

  • Charging. Lithium batteries are generally removable, so you can charge indoors. The MWAY also has a removable battery pack with a carry handle and charges on or off the scooter.
  • Speed and surfaces. At about 4 mph and with low clearance, these suit sidewalks, shops and indoor spaces, not gravel or grass. For rougher ground, see our outdoor mobility scooters.
  • Public transport and rules. Policies on buses and trains vary, so check before you travel. Follow local rules on where mobility scooters can be used.
  • Accessories. Armrests, baskets and carry cases are sold separately for some models. The MWAY includes a removable front basket.
  • Medical advice. If you have balance or strength concerns, talk to your doctor or therapist before choosing a scooter.
