What makes a mobility scooter "off road"?
Ground clearance. Higher clearance lifts the undercarriage over roots, rocks, curbs and ruts. Our all-terrain models offer roughly 4.3 to 4.7 inches.
Large pneumatic tires. Air-filled, deep-tread tires grip loose surfaces and cushion bumps. The Adventurer X8 runs 14-inch front and 16-inch rear tires.
Suspension. Front and rear suspension reduces jolts and vibration, so rough ground is easier on your back and joints.
Motor power. Motors from 700W to 1300W deliver the torque needed for slopes and soft ground. Rated inclines on our models are 9 to 10 degrees.
Frame and construction. A reinforced frame handles heavier loads and daily outdoor use.
Battery and range. Sealed lead-acid packs of 75Ah to 100Ah deliver roughly 30 miles of rated range. Terrain, hills and rider weight reduce it.
About "4x4" scooters: Many scooters sold as 4x4 off road mobility scooters are four-wheeled and rear-wheel drive, which is the case for the Adventurer X8. True dual-motor, all-wheel-drive models do exist. If traction on steep or loose ground is your priority, ask us and we'll check each model's drive system with you.
How to choose mobility scooters for off road use
Describe your terrain honestly. Packed gravel, grass and dirt paths suit most all-terrain models. Deep mud, sand, snow and steep slopes push any scooter past its limits.
Check clearance and tire size. Bigger tires and higher clearance handle roots, ruts and uneven ground better.
Match power to hills. Look at motor wattage and the rated incline, and choose a model with a margin.
Confirm weight capacity. Choose one rated well above your weight plus cargo.
Plan for range. Pick a battery that covers your longest outing with some to spare.
Plan for transport. None of these models disassemble for a car trunk, and weights run from 238 to 326 lb.
Category-specific questions
Can it handle grass, gravel and dirt paths? Yes, that's what large pneumatic tires and higher clearance are for. Very soft ground, deep mud or sand can still stop it.
Can it climb hills? Check each model's rated incline: 10 degrees for the Adventurer X8 and Aviator, and 9 degrees for the Ranger.
Will it fit through my gate or door? The Adventurer X8 is about 34 inches wide, and the Ranger and Aviator are about 28 inches. Measure first.
Will it turn in tight spaces? Turning radius ranges from about 46 inches (Aviator) to 94 inches (Adventurer X8). Choose the smaller one if your paths are narrow.
Can I put it in my car? No. These scooters don't break down for a trunk, so you'll need a ramp-equipped vehicle, van or trailer.
Transport. Plan a ramp, trailer or van from day one.
Charging. The Adventurer X8 charges on the scooter itself, so keep it within reach of an outlet in a garage or covered area.
Batteries. Large lead-acid packs are heavy and wear out over time, so ask us about replacement cost.
Cleaning. After muddy rides, wipe it down and let it dry. Avoid spraying high-pressure water at motors and electronics.
Safety. Ride slowly on slopes and loose ground, use lights and mirrors in low visibility, and follow local rules on where mobility scooters can be used, since rules vary by state.
