How to Transport a Mobility Scooter: Cars, Ramps & Lifts

How you’ll move your scooter should shape which one you buy. A scooter you can lift into a trunk and a scooter that needs a ramp or lift are very different purchases. Start with these options.

Option 1: Fold or dismantle it into a car trunk

This is the simplest option for lighter scooters. Compare weights:

  • Folding scooters: about 37 to 44 lb on the lightest models (Feather Fold, Pride GoGo Carbon, Micromus, Minimus, mLite Plus), about 69 lb for the auto-folding Li-Tech Alpina Velo.
  • Splitting (travel) scooters: the AstroLite and Illusion split into about five pieces, with the heaviest around 22 lb. The MWAY Portable’s heaviest piece is about 35 lb.
  • Heavier travel models: the LiteRider 4-wheel splits into sections, with the heaviest piece about 52 lb. The Buzzaround EX’s heaviest piece is about 53 lb.

Measure your trunk against the folded size. See our folding scooters and lightweight scooters.

Option 2: Ramp into an SUV, van or pickup

Mid-size scooters, which weigh roughly 240 to 330 lb, don’t fold. A ramp lets you drive or roll them up into a van or SUV. Check:

  • The ramp’s weight rating must exceed the scooter’s weight, and the rider’s weight too if you ride up it.
  • The ramp should be stable and secured to the vehicle before loading.
  • Roll slowly. Sudden movements can tip a scooter.

Option 3: Vehicle lift or hitch-mounted carrier

  • Interior lifts go in an SUV or van and raise the scooter into the cargo area.
  • Hitch-mounted carriers attach to a trailer hitch receiver on the back of your vehicle. For a hitch carrier, the number that matters is tongue weight, the downward force the hitch can support. Class I hitches are generally rated for about 200 lb of tongue weight, so a heavy scooter plus the carrier can exceed the limit. Check both your hitch and your vehicle’s ratings, and don’t exceed the rated weight of any part of the system.

Option 4: Wheelchair-accessible van or trailer

For heavier scooters, a lowered-floor van with a ramp or a trailer may be the safest and easiest solution.

Safe transport checklist

  • Never ride in the scooter while the vehicle is moving. A scooter should never be occupied during transport.
  • Secure it with proper tie-downs. Use heavy-duty straps at multiple points, so it can’t shift or become a projectile in a sudden stop.
  • Remove loose accessories, such as baskets, bags and the key.
  • Switch it off and put it in drive mode (not freewheel) as the manufacturer instructs.
  • Check batteries. Don’t carry a scooter with a damaged or leaking battery.
  • Re-check straps after the first few miles, and inspect ramps, lifts and straps for wear before each trip.
  • Check the scooter after transport. Vibration can loosen parts.

FAQ

Can I put a mobility scooter in a car trunk? Folding and travel scooters usually can. Measure your trunk and compare the folded size and heaviest piece.

Can I use a hitch carrier with any car? Only if your vehicle has a hitch receiver rated for the combined weight of the carrier and scooter.

What’s the easiest way to transport a heavy scooter? A vehicle lift, a ramp-equipped vehicle or a trailer, depending on your vehicle.

Do outdoor scooters fit in a car? Usually not. They don’t fold and weigh roughly 270 to 330 lb.
