Every scooter has a rated range, and almost every rider gets less. Rated range is measured in favorable conditions, so plan with a margin. Here’s what to expect and how to stretch it.
Typical rated ranges
| Scooter type | Typical rated range |
|---|---|
| Folding and travel scooters | about 7 to 11 miles |
| Mid-size outdoor scooters | about 30 to 35 miles |
| Large and heavy-duty outdoor scooters | about 20 to 32 miles |
Examples from our range: the Feather Fold is rated up to about 7.5 miles, the Li-Tech Alpina Velo up to about 10.6, the Abilize Ranger up to about 31, and the Kymco Maxer up to about 35.
Why real range is shorter
- Rider and cargo weight. The Rascal Pioneer, for example, is rated up to about 35 miles with a lighter rider and about 27 miles at its maximum rider weight.
- Hills and slopes. Climbing draws more power.
- Surface. Grass, gravel and soft ground use more energy than smooth pavement.
- Speed and stop-and-go riding. Constant acceleration drains the battery faster.
- Cold weather. Batteries deliver less in low temperatures.
- Battery age and charge. An older battery or one that wasn’t fully charged delivers less.
- Tire pressure on pneumatic tires. Under-inflated tires waste energy.
How to choose enough range
A practical guideline: pick a scooter whose rated range is at least 1.5 times your longest regular round trip. If your longest outing is 6 miles, look for 9 miles or more, and more if you ride hills, carry a load or ride in cold weather. This is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee.
How to test your own range
- Fully charge the battery.
- Ride a typical route and note the distance when the battery gauge drops to about one-quarter.
- Do it a couple of times. That’s your realistic working range.
How to get more distance
- Charge after every ride and avoid running the battery completely flat. See battery care.
- Keep tires at the recommended pressure.
- Ride at a steady, moderate speed.
- Stay within the weight limit.
- Store the scooter somewhere moderate in temperature.
- Replace an aging battery when range drops noticeably.
Range and battery types
Lithium batteries are lighter, which suits travel scooters. Many larger scooters use sealed lead-acid batteries, which are heavier but common and well understood. Range depends on capacity, so compare amp-hours (Ah) and voltage along with the rated miles.
FAQ
How far can a mobility scooter go on a single charge? From about 7 miles on compact folding models to 30 miles or more on larger outdoor scooters, depending on conditions.
Does a heavier rider reduce range? Yes. Heavier loads use more energy.
How long does a charge take? It varies by model and battery. Many manufacturers recommend charging overnight after each ride.
Can I carry a spare battery? Some models allow it. Ask us, and check airline rules if you fly.
